Mark's NetBSD Pages

WARNING: The information in this page is grossly out-dated. I will leave the pages up in case they might be of some use.

NOTE: I have not used NetBSD for more than 2 years! I have not used MacOS or Mac hardware in more than three years. If you have questions, you are probably better off e-mailing the NetBSD mailing lists rather than me.

Building NetBSD

NetBSD: Running Real UNIX on Your PC or Mac

Yes it is possible! NetBSD is a real UNIX system based on BSD sources that runs on various architectures. I have run it on Intel and the Mac 680X0 hardware. I started using NetBSD on an old Mac IIcx with 20MB of RAM and a 730MB hard disk. After that I turned my IIcx into the web server and bought a used Centris 650 with 40MB of RAM and a 1.2 GB hard disk. Most recently, I built a Pentium 200 machine with a 4.3 GB drive to run NetBSD. I now use NetBSD for most of my daily work. I have since given away my IIcx and Centris 650 so others can enjoy NetBSD. These pages are all about my experiences running NetBSD.

Some of these pages may be a bit out of date. NetBSD 1.4 has been released already, but I am still running 1.3!

What's Here:

My P200Bongo
Home built system with a 200MMX Pentium, a 4.3 GB HD, and 64MB of RAM. This system is running NetBSD 1.3.

Thinkpad 220Bob
An IBM Thinkpad 220 (386SL @ 16MHz) with a 1.4GB HD and 10 MB of RAM. This system is running FreeBSD 3.0 with an Etherlink III PCMCIA Ethernet card.

PalmPilotPalmPilot
I recently purchased a 3Com Palm Pilot Professional. It interfaces rather well with my NetBSD computer. Maybe someday they will have PalmBSD!

Using PPP on NetBSD
This page describes my method for setting up PPP to connect my NetBSD computer to the Internet via a dialup PPP connection.

Running MacBSD in Japanese
As I live in Japan, it was important to me to get NetBSD working in Japanese. Here is how I did it on the Mac68K port and some programs that I use.

My NetBSD Not-So-Frequently Asked Questions
This page describes my experiences setting up NetBSD on two different Macintosh computers. Learn from my mistakes!

UN*X on The Macintosh Links
This page contains links to various NetBSD and other sites related to running UN*X on the Macintosh.
