Mark's Index of Simple How-To Documents for MacBSD

Important Note: Many of these are out of date.

WARNING: The information in this page is grossly out-dated. I will leave the pages up in case they might be of some use.

NOTE: I have not used NetBSD for more than 2 years! I have not used MacOS or Mac hardware in more than three years. If you have questions, you are probably better off e-mailing the NetBSD mailing lists rather than me.

NetBSD

Getting NetBSD up and running takes a lot of time and effort. Some simple things that you may take for granted under MacOS, do not come easily under NetBSD. Here are some HOW-TO documents that I have created based on the notes I took as I struggled through to solve these problems or get these various functions working. Hopefully, by documenting them here, I can save others, especially those who are new to UN*X and NetBSD, some time, pain, and aggrivation.

Mark's How-To Documents

Upgrading to NetBSD 1.3
This page, written by Colin Wood and myself, describes step by step how to upgrade your NetBSD from 1.2.x to 1.3.x. It is based on my own trials and tribulations that I experienced upgrading my IIcx and Centris 650.

Setting Up PPP on NetBSD -- Step by Step
This page describes my method for setting up PPP to connect my NetBSD computer to the Internet via a dialup PPP connection. It is primarily for users who are familar with PPP under MacOS but new to PPP under UN*X.

Setting Up an Ethernet Network
This page has three sections. First, it explains how to connect a NetBSD machine to an existing Ethernet network. The second section describes how to set up a private TAN (tiny area network) via Ethernet that is not connected to the Internet. The final section is a simple networking FAQ for those who are new to networking.

Setting Up Color X on MacBSD
Extremely out-dated! This page describes my method for setting up the X colorkit on a Mac IIcx. This should work for any Macintosh that has a Nubus video card.

Running MacBSD in Japanese
As I live in Japan, it was important to me to get NetBSD working in Japanese. Here is how I did it and some programs that I use.

Other Useful HOW-TO Documents

Installation HOW-TO by Larry Kollar
This page by Larry Kollar takes the standard install document and explains the installation process in more detail, explaing basic concepts for users who are new to UN*X.

Kernel Compiling HOW-TO by Colin Wood
This document by Colin Wood describes the steps need to compile your own kernel that is optimized for your system. It is based on a previous work by Allen Briggs.

Ethernet Networking HOW-TO
Explains the basics of setting up NetBSD to connect via an Ethernet connection to a network based on the familiar settings in MacTCP and Open Transport.
